Pippi Longstocking

Pippi Longstocking lives in a ramshackle house with a horse on the porch, a monkey on the roof, and a trunk full of gold coins in the kitchen. Without any parents to tell her when to go to bed, Pippi has the perfect life – especially for a nine-year-old.

Naturally the children next door are curious about their new neighbor. And they are not disappointed when they meet her. Pippi, they soon discover, isn’t like other neighbors. She doesn’t simply climb up trees, she climbs inside of them. And when she scrubs the floors, she scrubs not with her hands, but with her feet. She can even lift a horse. Pippi can turn anything into an adventure.

Book Review

I remember this book from when I was a child. I loved the strongest girl in the world. It seems that Pippi has not lost her appeal because my children love her too. There are 11 stories in this first book. There are quite a few other books in the series.

Favorite stories included “Pippi Goes to School” and “Pippi Goes to the Circus.” My boys audibly gasped when Pippi kept interrupting the teacher. Their teachers would not allow such nonsense in class. They now do “pluttifikation” instead of multiplication. When Pippi goes to the circus, she shows off her daring do when walking the tightrope and out-wrestling the World’s Strongest Man. It was great fun of Pippi and her readers, but not so much for the ringmaster.

Pippi is not a good role model. She does not go to school, treats adults with disrespect (not on purpose – she is trying to be good), or do anything the “normal” way. She creates her own rules for everything. But, she does everything with a good heart, which makes her such a beloved children’s character.

Audiobook

We did not listen to the audiobook.

Movie Tie-In

There are a few movies based on Pippi Longstocking. We were able to find the G rated Pippi Longstocking movie from 1969 on YouTube.

My youngest just started watching the animated 1998 TV series Pippi Longstocking on Peacock. All 26 episodes are available. He seems to be enjoying the animated Pippi.

The Verdict

This is a classic book for a reason. We thoroughly enjoyed Pippi’s antics and are continuing the series with Pippi Goes on Board.
